The Union power ministry has targeted
to commission fresh capacity of 20,000 MW during 2006-07 making it the largest
capacity addition in any year so far. According to information available from
the ministry, 88 projects are currently underway all over the country. Of these,
53 projects with a combined capacity of 20,000 MW are being monitored closely
for completion during 2006-07.
In the first four years (2002-03 to
2005-06) of the ongoing X Five Year plan, 47 commercial projects have been
commissioned with a total capacity of 14,350 MW. Along with captive power plants
of 2,350 MW, the total addition has been 16,700 MW.
The total addition in the X Plan
period is likely to be 39,000 MW as against the target of 41,110 MW. The actual
power capacity addition in the IX Plan (1996-97 to 2001-02) was 19,015 MW and
that in the preceding Plan period was 16,422 MW.
