The board of Steel Authority of India,
on 29 August 2006, approved three new modernisation projects at various
facilities of the company at an estimated cost of Rs.350 crore. These include
- Re-building of a coke oven battery
with an investment of Rs.176 crore at the Bhilai Steel Plant in
Chhattisgarh, to meet its coke requirement for the enhanced hot metal
capacity envisaged under its modernisation and expansion plan. This is the
sixth COB of SAIL taken up for revamping and retrofitting state-of-art
pollution control measures under its growth plan. (project

- Installation of a computerized
process system at one of the steel melting shops at the Bokaro Steel Plant
(Jharkhand) at an investment of Rs.31 crore. The system will be integrated
with the existing system for the improvement of yield and quality of steel
produced by SMS II as well as for upgrading its efficiency. (project

- Installation of a main step down
substation and transmission network at an investment of Rs.141 crore for
evacuation from a 280 MW power plant at the Bhilai Steel Plant.
Prior to this, the SAIL board has
approved projects worth Rs.11,000 crore in July 2006 which included the
modernisation and expansion plan for the IISCO steel plant at an investment of
Rs.9,592 crore. Three major packages - new sinter plant, new heavy structural
mill and site leveling with a total investment of around Rs.1,200 crore has
already been rendered.
