Larsen & Toubro has shortlisted
three states -- Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat -- to set up a Rs.2,000
crore shipyard catering to high-value ships. The company is in the process of
identifying a suitable location -- it would need 800-1,200 acres of land -- for
the project. L&T expects to finalise the location by end-January 2007.
L&T already has a shipyard at Hazira
near Surat (Gujarat) for construction of high-technology vessels of up to 150m
length and displacement of 20,000 tonne. The Hazira shipyard will focus on
construction of commercial vessels and warships for the Navy as well as the
Coast Guard.
