Oil & Natural Gas Corporation has
made a huge gas find in the Krishna Godavari Basin (KG-DWN-98/2 Block), with
initial estimates suggesting reserves of about 21 tcf.
ONGC holds 90 per cent operating
interest in the KG basin block and Cairn India acquired has 10 per cent.
The test reports of the first well (UD-1) in the KG basin confirmed a 30m
gas pay zone at a depth of 5,300m. The reserve size may increase further
as seismic studies of the well indicate presence of another 80 metre gas pay
zone at a depth of 6,450 metres.
ONGC officials said that by present
indications, the company will be able to supply 50 mcmd (million cubic meters
per day) of gas, more than half of 90 mcmd present consumption, from the
identified as UD-1 in block KG/DWN/98/2 acquired from Cairn energy 150 km off
the Andhra coast.
The company are expecting to drill the
residual targets and test the results by early-2007.
