Bharat Heavy Electricals bagged a
contract on turnkey basis from Damodar Valley Corporation for setting up 1,000 MW
(2x500 MW) at Mejia thermal power station in West Bengal.
BHEL's scope of work includes
manufacture, supply, erection testing and commissioning of steam turbines,
generators, boilers, associated auxiliaries, balance of plant and electricals
besides state-of-the-art controls & instrumentation (C&I), electrostatic
precipitators (ESPs) and switchyard, including complete civil works.
The turbine generators and boilers
will be manufactured at the company's Haridwar and Trichy plants respectively,
while the C&I system will be supplied by BHEL's electronics division,
Bangalore. The company's Hyderabad plant will manufacture the coal mills and
boiler feed pumps and the electricals and switchyard equipment will be supplied
by BHEL's Bhopal and Jhansi plants. BHEL's Ranipet plant will manufacture and
supply the ESPs.
Slated for synchronisation during the
XI Plan, the project will add nearly 24 million units every day to the grid on
completion, a major portion of which will be transmitted to Delhi for the
Commonwealth Games in 2010.
Mejia TPS is already equipped with 4
BHEL -built units of 210 MW each, while the company is executing a turnkey
contract for setting up another 2 units of 250 MW each at the project, which are
in an advanced stage of commissioning.
BHEL has fully established
state-of-the-art technology for manufacture of thermal sets up to 500 MW rating
and has the capability to manufacture sets up to 1,000 MW rating for power
projects, suited to Indian conditions, using Indian as well as imported coal. So
far, the company has won orders for 44 numbers of 500 MW rating sets, of which
27 sets have been commissioned. Notably, BHEL sets account for 12,000 MW or
nearly 69 per cent of the cumulative generating capacity in the Eastern region.
