On 31 May 2007, the Board of Approval
for Special Economic Zones (SEZ) granted 22 formal approvals including the
high-profile Gopalpur SEZ multi-product promoted by the Tatas in Orissa.
The BoA also gave six in-principle
approvals but deferred a decision on the Mukesh Ambani-promoted Navi Mumbai SEZ
on points raised by the representative of the Revenue Department.
The formal approvals include
- IT/ITES SEZ by Technopark, Tamil
Nadu
- IT/ITES SEZ by Genpact (India),
Andhra Pradesh
- IT/ITES SEZ by Shivaji Marg
Properties, Delhi
- Biotech SEZ by Gujarat Industrial
Development Corporation, Vadodara
- Gems and Jewellery SEZ by Shripur
Gold Refinery at Dhulia, Maharashtra
- Three SEZs for textiles, leather
and engineering goods by Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development
Corporation (UPSIDC) at Kanpur, UP.
In-principle nod includes
- SRM Infrastructure in Alwar for
multi-product SEZ
- Muti services SEZ by Society for
Innovative Education and Development at Alwar
- A Carpet and Handicraft SEZ by
UPSIDC in Bhadohi, UP
- IT/ITES SEZ by Writers & Publishers
in Chindwara, Madhya Pradesh
- Chennai Business Park in
Kanchipuram district, TN for IT/ITES/BPO and Electronics industries.
So far, 111 SEZs have been notified
and 41 are in the process of being notified. In the zones notified up till now,
Rs.35,000 crore have been invested and 32,578 direct employment to people have
been created.
