The Himachal Pradesh government has
decided to hand over land in Kangra district to Steel Authority of India (SAIL)
to set up its first steel plant in the state. So currently, the state government
is in the process of transferring the land at Kandrori village near Nurpur town,
some 300 kilometres from Shimla. SAIL team had already inspected the site and
completed formalities.
Work on the plant will start by August
2008 and will be based on thermo-mechanical treatment technology. The plant to
cost Rs.106 crore will produce 120,000 tpa of steel rods, wire drawings along
with corrugated sheets and is scheduled to become operational by October 2009.
The proposed steel processing unit
will be the first of its kind in north India by SAIL.
