Rail Vikas Nigam on 31 March 2010 completed work on rail connectivity to the
international container transshipment terminal at Vallarpadam in Kerala. The work
has been carried out at a cost of Rs 350 crore. The trial run on the rail line
is in progress.
The project covers a length of 8.86 km to Vallarpadam from Edappally near the
existing southern railway network. The rail link has 4.62 km long rail bridge
and other four small bridges, which passes through the inhabited area of
Vaduthala and its backwaters, Mulavukad Island and finally reaches Vallarpadam,
where a new railway station is being constructed. While a new railway station
has been constructed at Edappally, the new railway station at Vallarpadam is
nearing completion.
