Work on Gujarat Ecology Commissions headed and the World Bank (WB) assisted
Integrated Coastal Zone Management project (ICZMP) in Gujarat is likely to
commence in June 2010.
The Gulf of Kachchh has been identified as project area to implement ICZMP in
Gujarat due to its unique conditions as ecological and economical hub in the
state. Main focus of the project is to increase mangrove cover in the state,
coral transplatation and pollution abatement.
The WB has provided a soft loan of Rs 1,155 crore and the state government
has granted Rs 298 crore for the project.
The State Forest Department, Gujarat Ecology Commission, Gujarat Ecological
Education & Research Foundation, Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Application
and Geo-Informatics, Gujarat Pollution Control Board are expected to work
together for ICZMP.
