Company plans to invest Rs.5,000 crore in expanding its smelter capacity from 1
lakh tonnes to 3.5 lakh tonnes and its captive power plant to 810 MW from 210
MW. The alumina capacity would also be increased to 7 lakh tonnes from the
current 2.1 lakh tonnes. The expansion is yet to receive environmental
clearance. The company has entered into an agreement with Gami, China based
company, for providing technical know how. The agreement is yet to receive
approval from Secretariat of Industrial Assistance (SIA).
Balco had
shelved its expansion plans anticipating National Aluminium Company’s
divestment. The delay in the divestment process has resulted in the company
reviving its expansion plans.
