A total of 272 projects worth approx. Rs 1.41 lakh crore have been completed under the Centre’s flagship Sagarmala programme, with 103 projects under the "modernisation pillar" expanding the country’s port capacity by over 528 million tonne per annum, the Parliament was informed.
"There were a total of 839 projects worth ?5.79 lakh crore included in the Sagarmala Programme. These are categorised into five pillars – port modernisation, port connectivity, port-led industrialisation, coastal community development, and coastal shipping & inland water transport," Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
These projects are being implemented by various entities, including Central Ministries, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Indian Railways, state governments, and major ports.
Sagarmala is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways aimed at port-led development by leveraging India’s 7,500 km coastline, 14,500 km of navigable waterways, and its strategic position on key international maritime trade routes.
