The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has submitted a study to the Water Resources Department (WRD) to support the construction of an elevated corridor and satellite terminal at Chennai Airport.
The satellite terminal, proposed nearly eight years ago, aims to help manage air and passenger traffic more efficiently and make better use of remote bays. Although the project had been delayed for several years, it was revived in 2024. AAI had initially planned to establish connectivity to the terminal through additional land, but when the Tamil Nadu government denied this request, AAI proposed an elevated corridor from National Highway 32 instead. The new route will pass near Madha Arts and Science College, cross the Adyar River, and end at the terminal.
The plan does not require additional land but needs approval from the WRD and Central Pollution Control Board. If approved, AAI will allocate funds for the terminal and corridor, which may serve as a passenger or exclusive cargo terminal.
