The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 240 million loan for the expansion of the Metro network in Chennai.
This funding is part of a larger USD 780 million facility approved in 2022. The new loan will support key sections of metro lines 3, 4, and 5, spanning 20 km with 18 new stations. These will feature universal access and disaster-resilient infrastructure to ensure safety during extreme weather events. ADB Country Director for India, Mio Oka, emphasised that the project will provide "safer, faster, and more reliable daily travel" while helping Chennai meet its low-carbon development goals.
The loan will fund civil and system works for various metro lines, including power, traction, and telecommunications. Additionally, upgrades to multimodal interchange areas will improve transfers between metro, buses, and other transport options. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2028
