Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has inaugurated the world’s first steel slag road within a port facility at Hazira Port, Gujarat. The 1.1-km stretch, connecting the multi-purpose berth (MPB-1) to the coal yard, sets a new global benchmark in the sustainable use of industrial waste.
Developed as part of Phase-II of the Bulk & General Cargo Terminal (BGCT) expansion, the project uses processed steel slag aggregates—a byproduct of steel manufacturing—demonstrating an eco-conscious approach to infrastructure development. This pioneering initiative is a collaborative effort involving APSEZ, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), and the Union Ministry of Science & Technology.
The road features a specially designed flexible pavement by CSIR-CRRI, offering superior load-bearing capacity and durability, while also reducing construction costs and environmental impact. It also aligns with India’s "Waste to Wealth" mission and reflects APSEZ’s commitment to sustainable port development. Although this is the country’s third steel slag road overall, its status as the first-ever built inside a port positions India at the forefront of sustainable infrastructure innovation.
