Adani Group’s Vizhinjam International Seaport has achieved a significant milestone, handling over one million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) within nine months of commercial operations.
The port, operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), began operations on 03 December, 2024. Initially expected to reach 30 percent of its one-million TEU capacity in the first year, it surpassed expectations in under a year. Kerala’s Minister for Ports, V N Vasavan, said, “This is a proud moment for Kerala and India as an emerging maritime power,” adding that the second project phase, along with railway and road connectivity, would commence soon.
Since launch, Vizhinjam has received over 460 vessels, including 26 ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) up to 399.99 mtrs. Notably, the MSC Paloma saw 10,576 TEUs handled, the highest container exchange at an Indian port. Officials credited planning, crane deployment, berth use, and AI- and IoT-enabled systems for real-time cargo tracking.
