Adani Power (APL), India’s largest private thermal power producer, has completed the Rs 4,000-crore acquisition of Vidarbha Industries Power (VIPL), a 600 MW coal-based thermal power project located in Butibori, Nagpur in Maharashtra.
The acquisition, finalised on 07 July, follows the approval of APL’s resolution plan by the Mumbai Bench of the NCLT on June 18, as VIPL was undergoing insolvency under the IBC framework. VIPL comprises two 300 MW domestic coal-fired units and now adds to APL’s total operational capacity, which has risen to 18,150 MW. The company targets scaling its capacity to 30,670 MW by FY30, via greenfield and brownfield projects.
APL is currently developing six ultra-supercritical thermal power projects (USCTPPs) of 1,600 MW each at Singrauli-Mahan in Madhya Pradesh, Raigarh and Korba in Chhattisgarh, and Kawai in Rajasthan, and a 1,600 MW greenfield USCTPP in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. The company is also reviving a 1,320 MW plant at Korba. In 2025, Adani Power generated 100 billion units of electricity, the highest by any private company in India, according to Chairman Gautam Adani.
