Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that a Rs 40,000 crore, 3,000-MW thermal power project will be established in the state, with two land parcels identified in Dhubri and Goalpara districts. The foundation stone is expected to be laid by November.
While Kokrajhar was initially considered for the project to bring major investment benefits, the state government decided against it following criticism that it was attempting to "take away tribal land." The project is expected to generate one lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities. The project aligns with Assam’s industrial growth goals and marks a significant development in its infrastructure expansion.
The CM informed that the government initially proposed Kokrajhar to receive a project on par with the Rs 26,000-crore Tata semiconductor unit coming up in Jagiroad. However, opposition from some groups led to the reconsideration. He further said that the 4,000-bigha land occupied by only 80 families could still host institutions like hospitals or colleges.
