Air India’s maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) unit in Nagpur is set to be operational on 30 April, 2015.
The facility is built by Boeing at an estimated cost of $107 million. It is spread across 50 acre of land and can accommodate several wide-bodied and narrow-bodied aircraft at a time.
The carrier also plans to build a $90 million engine MRO unit with engine-maker General Electronic (GE). It will be located next to the airframe MRO facility at Nagpur.
Air India’s MRO unit will offer : A checks (scheduled maintenance checks performed every 125 flight hours); B checks (detailed check of the aircraft’s components and systems performed every 4-6 months); and C checks (extensive check of individual systems and components for serviceability and function conducted every 20-24 months) for aircraft.
The MRO unit will offer its facilities to Air India’s fleet and also to third parties. Presently, Air India has 102 aircraft in its fleet, consisting of 38 Boeing and 62 Airbus aircraft. Similarly, MRO facilities are presently being developed in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata by the national carrier.
Once all the MRO units become fully operational, it is expected to clock Rs 500 crore revenue a year.
