The implementation of the ‘Alappuzha – A Global Water Wonderland’ project under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme is set to commence, with a total outlay of Rs 93.17 crore.
Of this, Rs 74.95 crore will be provided as a loan by the Union government. Kerala Tourism Infrastructure has been designated as the nodal agency for project execution. A preparatory meeting was recently held, attended by District Collector Alex Varghese and MLAs PP Chitharanjan and H Salam. The initiative aims to transform Alappuzha’s beach, backwaters, and historic canals into a globally renowned eco-sensitive tourism hub.
Key beachfront developments include promenade walkways, landscaped seating areas, lighting, parking lots, event spaces, waste management systems, and an Indian Coast Guard station. The canal-side upgrades focus on revitalising Alappuzha’s waterways into vibrant public spaces while preserving their ecological and cultural value. Enhancements will include walkways, plazas, cafes, boat docks, and jetties.
An international cruise terminal will be established at Punnamada Finishing Point, featuring parking, a marina, a water adventure zone, experience centre, kiosks, a restaurant, and public restrooms. Collector Varghese stated that all necessary approvals will be secured swiftly, aiming for project completion by February 2026.
