The desiltation project of the Aruvikkara dam reservoir in Thiruvananthapuram has had its completion deadline extended to the end of 2026.
Initially launched in November 2024 with a one-year target, the project aims to remove over 10.24 lakh cubic mtrs. of silt, sand, and clay to enhance the dam’s storage capacity by one million cubic mtrs. Due to the critical role the dam plays in supplying water to Thiruvananthapuram city, the Water Resources Department (WRD) is proceeding cautiously to avoid disrupting the supply. Minister for Water Resources Roshy Augustine confirmed the new timeline in the State Legislative Assembly.
The Kerala Irrigation Infrastructure Development Corporation (KIIDC) is overseeing the project. Built between 1928 and 1933 on the Karamana River, the Aruvikkara dam’s capacity has declined by 43 percent over 37 years due to siltation. The initiative is crucial to meet the rising water demands of the capital and surrounding areas.
