The Water Resources Department (WRD) has submitted a Rs 7.08 crore proposal to the Tamil Nadu government for the rehabilitation of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) Canal System.
The proposal is based on a detailed project report (DPR) prepared by Bengalurubased SECON., which began work in early 2023 after the GO was issued in July 2022. Drones were used for canal measurements, covering the 124-km main canal and its branches. Farmers, particularly at the canal's tail-end, have long demanded micro-irrigation improvements for equitable water distribution. Currently, only minor repairs have been done on the 50-year-old canal infrastructure.
The project aims to restore the canal to its original standards using RCC troughs, precast slabs, and RR masonry to reduce conveyance loss and enhance efficiency. Once state approval is granted, the proposal will be sent to the Central Water Commission to identify suitable central funding schemes. Further technical and implementation details will be shared post-approval.
