Leading truck and bus maker Ashok Leyland will manufacture its upcoming electric small trucks at its light commercial vehicle (LCV) facility at the company’s Hosur factory in Tamil Nadu, with a focus on digital tools, flexible operations, and building of capacities.
The company, which would be launching two new electric small trucks, electric 'Dost' and electric 'Bada Dost' to grow the LCV volumes, has aligned its lines for these products at the production complex. LCV products are assembled by women in the assembly line, which has a capacity of 62,000 engines per annum and has incorporated industry 4.0 features.
The Hinduja flagship is closely working with its subsidiary company Switch Mobility, for the sales of the electric products.
In terms of future-readiness, the overall capacity has already been ramped up by 15-20 percent in the past two years. The all-women team was able to achieve production from zero to 120 engines a day in a single shift in 75 days, achieving a higher than the previous production peak. Further, the IoT-enabled manufacturing process assurance system (MPAS), is in place to meet the quality requirements.
The company, which clocked its highest-ever LCV volumes of about 67,000 units in FY23 intends to roll out products in new and existing segments both in ICE and electric variants.
As demand shows a major tilt towards the AVTR platform, which is a modular one, the company is visibly maintaining its capabilities across the South and North-based factories.
