BHEL intends to form five JVs in the nuclear sector and locomotive
manufacturing and has planned an outlay of Rs 1,000 crore for the proposed JVs.
Currently, BHEL is holding talks with Areva (France), Toshiba (Japan),
Westinghouse (USA) and GE Hitachi for building reactors. It has initiated talks
with Bharat Forge and Areva for its forgings and castings JV. Sheffield
Forgemasters, UK has been appointed as technical partner in the venture. GE is
in talks with BHEL for building diesel locomotives, while Toshiba is looking at
a JV for 7,500 HP locomotives.
The JV for building steam generators for reactors will have a foreign partner
in addition to NPCIL. BHEL is in talks with a firm in Europe and will give 30-35
per cent stake in the venture to the JV partner. BHEL is likely to finalise the
partner by end-July 2009 which will build 1,000-1,600 MW generators.
