The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to open the newly constructed Sindoor Flyover, previously known as Carnac Bridge, on July 10. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the bridge, which has been renamed to honor “Operation Sindoor” — a military initiative launched by India.
Located near Masjid Bunder railway station, the flyover connects D’Mello Road and serves as a vital link between the east and west of South Mumbai. The Sindoor Flyover spans 328 mtrs., including 70 mtrs. within railway limits. It features two steel girders, each 70 mtrs. long, 26.5 mtrs. wide, and 10.8 mtrs. high, mounted on reinforced concrete (RCC) piers. The southern girder was launched on 19 October, 2024, while the northern girder was installed on 26 and 30, January 2025. Construction was completed by June 10, 2025.
The flyover facilitates two-way traffic and is expected to significantly ease congestion near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Masjid Bunder, and Mohammad Ali Road. Originally declared unsafe in August 2022 by Central Railway, the 154-year-old bridge was dismantled and rebuilt with approval from the railway authority to restore vital connectivity in the area.
