Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is preparing a detailed plan to generate 100 MW of power from 1,000 million litre per day of sewage produced in Bangalore.
For this purpose, BWSSB has identified 14 sewage treatment plants (STP) where methane gas can be produced from sewage.
As the STPs are in good condition, BWSSB can soon start generating methane by constructing a digester near them. In order to generate methane in the digester, the BWSSB has to first ensure that the methane generated is pure in nature; if not the generator that burns methane will be destroyed soon.
BWSSB has already started the process to generate electricity from sewage at one of the STPs in Hebbal valley by signing a pact with England-based Mott MacDonald.
Mott MacDonald has already imported the machinery required to produce one MW of power and has started the procedure to construct a digester near one of the STPs.
