Delhi’s Tehkhand waste-to-energy (WTE) plant is set to increase its capacity from 2,000 to 3,000 tonne per day.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is expecting to secure environmental clearance by January 2026. This expansion will enhance power generation from 25MW to 45MW and enable the production of 20,000 cubic mtrs. of biogas daily. The upgraded plant will also contribute to reducing Delhi's landfill burden, which processes 11,300 metric tonne of waste daily.
A key official noted, “The expansion will increase power generation and biogas production, which are crucial for managing Delhi's substantial daily waste.” MCD is also finalising agreements for the Okhla WTE plants, with deadlines set for March 2027 and December 2027 for Okhla and Tehkhand, respectively. Both projects are critical to alleviating pressure on the city's overburdened landfills.
