The Indian Railways has sanctioned the quadrupling project for the Badlapur-Karjat line under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-3B), following approval from the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs on 30 December, 2025.
The third and fourth rail lines, spanning 32.46 km and covering six key suburban stations, aims to enhance capacity on the high-density Mumbai–Chennai rail corridor. The expanded line will address rising passenger and freight demands, particularly with upcoming ports and logistics terminals in the region. The project requires approx. 37.79 hectares of land and is estimated to cost Rs 1,324 crore. The funding will be shared equally between the Maharashtra government and the Railways Ministry, while the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) will oversee the execution.
The CCEA has also approved the construction of a six-lane access-controlled Nashik–Solapur–Akkalkot corridor in Maharashtra at a cost of Rs 19,142 crore. The 374-km corridor will be developed under the build-operate-transfer (Toll) model and aims to improve regional and inter-state connectivity, and is expected to reduce travel distance by 201 km and save 17 hours in travel time, improving logistics efficiency and enhancing freight movement.
