Chennai Metro Rail's (CMRL) Phase II expansion is now nearly 49 percent complete, with the Union government releasing Rs 10,354.15 crore for the project.
This was shared by Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu, in the Rajya Sabha. The 118.9 km Phase II network, one of the largest urban transit expansions in India, was initially approved as a state sector project by the Tamil Nadu government. The Centre formally sanctioned it in October 2024, and funding is being provided under a joint structure, with CMRL acting as a 50:50 special purpose vehicle (SPV) between the Union and state governments.
During the Rajya Sabha session, DMK MP Rajathi inquired about the Rs 9,500 crore advanced by Tamil Nadu for what would be the Centre’s share of the project cost.
