The 51.38-km broad gauge Bairabi–Sairang railway line was commissioned on 10 June, 2025, marking a significant milestone for the Northeastern state. The final stretch, a 33.86-km section from Hortoki to Sairang, underwent inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (Northeast Frontier Circle), between June 6 and June 10, 2025.
Following successful inspection, the line was authorised and deemed technically safe, according to Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). “The railway line is technically safe now. Once the Centre gives its nod, trains will start operating. The formal inauguration is to take place soon,” he stated.
The newly commissioned line features 32 tunnels and 35 major bridges, navigating the challenging hilly terrain of Mizoram. This development enables direct rail connectivity to Aizawl, the state capital, for the first time. “This milestone completes the entire 51.38-km stretch, bringing direct rail connectivity to Aizawl,” he added.
The project addresses a long-standing demand of the region’s residents and is expected to significantly boost both passenger and freight movement in Mizoram, contributing to economic and logistical development.
