Balrampur Chini Mills (BCML), one of India’s largest sugar manufacturers, has launched Balrampur Bioyug, a new eco-friendly brand aimed at producing sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic.
The Rs 2,850 crore investment will fund India’s first industrial-scale PLA plant at BCML’s existing facility in Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh. The brand was formally unveiled by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai. Bioyug is based on poly lactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable polymer made from sugarcane, and will be supplied to small-scale units to manufacture compostable products such as straws, cutlery, trays, and bottles.
Powered entirely by renewable energy, this integrated site will convert sugarcane directly into PLA. The plant will have an annual capacity of 80,000 tonne. Company leaders have emphasised that this initiative aligns with India’s BioE3 policy and Uttar Pradesh’s new Bioplastic Policy, promoting sustainable development through bioenergy and green innovation.
