The Central Institute of Coastal Engineering for Fishery (CICEF) has commenced the feasibility study for development of Phase-II of the Puthiyappa harbour located in Kozhikode city of Kerala.
As part of assessing the technical and financial viability of the Rs 38 crore harbour project, a team of CICEF visited the project site to examine the feasibility of the project.
The Harbour Engineering wing has designed the final project, which has been submitted for the consideration of the state and Central government.
As part of the project, a series of developmental programmes will be taken up in the region. About 11 projects have been identified from Phase-II of the project and are expected to be completed in a time bound manner. The CICEF team will make the necessary modifications in the project and finally forward it for consideration of the Agriculture Ministry.
Work such as extension of the wharf, construction of a slipway for anchoring of fishing vessels, and building spacious auction halls will also form part of the project.
In 2008, the project proposal for Phase-I of the harbour modernisation project was submitted to the Union Ministry of Agriculture for approval. Then, the Union government had sanctioned Rs 10 crore for completing the work on Phase-I of the project.
