Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on 28 May, 2025 inaugurated the country’s first exclusive fishing harbour for Tuna fishing at Tiruvottiyur, constructed at a cost of Rs 272.70 crore.
A government release stated that the harbour is equipped with modern facilities enabling fishermen returning from deep-sea Tuna fishing to quickly market their catch to exporters without compromising quality. The harbour is expected to benefit approx. 6,250 people from 12 fishing villages and has the capacity to handle 70,000 tonnes of fish annually.
In addition, the Chief Minister inaugurated 12 other fisheries department projects across the state via video conference, completed at a total cost of Rs 426.13 crore. He also laid the foundation stone for fish landing centres worth Rs 170 crore at Thangachimadam and Rosma Nagar in Ramanathapuram district.
