The capital city, Thiruvananthapuram is set to launch the CITIIS 2.0 (City Investments To Innovate, Integrate and Sustain) programme by mid-October, targeting climate-focused reforms and a circular economy through integrated waste management.
The detailed project report (DPR), now under final review by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, aims to generate Rs 31 lakh monthly by converting waste into revenue resources and achieving zero-garbage status through 100 percent scientific waste handling. The city generates 352.58 tonne of solid waste daily. Out of the Rs 129.66 crore allocation, the state will contribute Rs 103.7 crore and the Centre Rs 25.9 crore.
The plan includes organic waste converters, sensor-based aerobic bins, RDF plants, recycling units, shredders, compactors, suction and sweeping machines, IT-enabled waste collection systems, and incinerators for institutions. The project, implemented by the SCTL and city corporation, is expected to be completed by 2027, significantly enhancing the capital’s waste management infrastructure.
