CMA CGM Group, a global shipping and logistics leader, has signed a letter of intent to build six LNG-powered containerships to be built at Cochin Shipyard (CSL), marking the first time a major foreign carrier has commissioned such vessels from an Indian shipyard.
Scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2031, each vessel will be Indian-flagged and have a capacity of 1,700 TEUs. This aligns with CMA CGM’s fleet renewal and energy transition strategy, targeting Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2050. The vessels, capable of running on LNG and ready for low-carbon fuels, reflect the Group’s commitment to sustainability. The project involves technical collaboration with Korea's HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, reinforcing support for India’s Make-in-India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
CMA CGM also plans to reflag four vessels under the Indian registry in 2025. Chairman Rodolphe Saadé emphasised India’s strategic role in the company’s global plans across logistics, training, and sustainable shipping.
