Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), a major South Korean shipbuilder, has partnered with Swan Defense and Heavy Industries (SDHI) to enter India’s shipbuilding sector.
The collaboration aims to align with the Indian government's push for localised ship production. The agreement includes exploring joint efforts across various ocean engineering projects such as procurement, engineering, and shipbuilding management. Based in Gujarat, SDHI is India's largest shipyard, handling 30 percent of the nation's shipbuilding capacity and operating the country’s largest dry dock capable of handling very large crude carriers and other major maritime structures.
Samsung plans to expand its footprint locally, leveraging SDHI’s infrastructure to tap into India's booming logistics and shipping industries. According to Grand View Research, India’s shipping sector is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.4 percent from 2025 to 2030, highlighting the strong potential for sustained growth and investment in domestic shipbuilding capabilities.
