Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) has awarded contracts worth nearly Rs 436 crore for integrated transit-oriented developments (TOD) along the city's IT corridor.
These projects are part of CMRL’s strategy to monetize station-area real estate while improving commuter access to the metro network. A major portion of the investment—Rs 268.8 crore, will go toward the design and construction of integrated entry and exit structures with commercial spaces at Sholinganallur and Thoraipakkam stations, located on Old Mahabalipuram Road, a rapidly growing tech and business hub. The scope of work includes civil construction and architectural finishes aimed at blending transit facilities with commercial development.
The Thoraipakkam project will feature a multi-level commercial building, while Sholinganallur will have a larger commercial complex with eight floors. A standout feature of Sholinganallur is the integration of a link line connecting Corridor-3 and Corridor-5 within the commercial building, allowing direct Metro access. According to CMRL, the development aims to improve pedestrian movement and reduce dependence on private vehicles.
