The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved a total outlay of Rs 6,520 crore, including an additional Rs 1,920 crore, for the ongoing Central Sector Scheme "Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana" (PMKSY) during the 15th Finance Commission Cycle (2021-22 to 2025-26).
This includes Rs1,000 crore to set up 50 Multi-Product Food Irradiation Units under the Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure (ICCVAI) and 100 NABL-accredited Food Testing Labs under the Food Safety and Quality Assurance Infrastructure (FSQAI). An additional Rs 920 crore will fund various PMKSY component schemes. ICCVAI and FSQAI are demand-driven, with proposals invited via expressions of interest (EOIs) and approved per existing guidelines. The irradiation units will add 20–30 lakh tonne annual preservation capacity.
The food testing labs, largely in the private sector, will enhance infrastructure for advanced food testing, ensuring compliance with safety standards and the supply of safe food nationwide.
