The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its nod for establishment of two new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Madurai in Tamil Nadu and Bibinagar, Telangana.
The AIIMS will be set up under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). The one at Madurai will be set up at the cost of Rs 1,264 crore and another at Bibinagar at Rs 1,028 crore. The construction cost and operations and maintenance expenses will be fully borne by the Central government.
The new AIIMS involves setting up of hospital, teaching block for medical and nursing courses, residential complex and allied facilities/services on the lines of AIIMS in New Delhi and other six new AIIMS taken up under Phase-I of PMSSY.
Each new AIIMS will add 100 UG (MBBS) seats and 60 BSc (Nursing) seats, and 15-20 super speciality departments.
The proposed institution will have a hospital with a capacity of 750 beds. It will include emergency/trauma beds, AYUSH beds, private beds and ICU speciality and super speciality beds.
Moreover, there will be a medical college, AYUSH block, auditorium, night shelter, guest house, hostels and residential facilities. The recurring cost in the institutions will be met through Grant-in-Aid to them from the plan budget head of PMSSY of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The time frame for establishment of the project is 45 months, including pre-construction phase of 10 months, construction phase of 32 months and stabilisation/commissioning phase of three months.
The project will create employment for nearly 3,000 people in various faculty & non-faculty posts in each AIIMS, while indirect employment will be created due to facilities & services like shopping centre, canteens, etc to come up around in the vicinity.
