The Central government has announced plans to build underground rail tracks along a 40-km corridor in West Bengal to improve connectivity between the North East and the rest of India.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared that this project would cover the stretch between Tin Mile Haat and Rangapani stations. This move is crucial not only for improving transportation efficiency but also for enhancing security in the region, which is often referred to as the "chicken’s neck." The project will also include expanding the existing rail infrastructure to a four-line system, increasing the capacity and reliability of the area’s railway network. The plans come as part of the government's broader focus on improving regional connectivity and safety, particularly in strategic corridors.
The underground section, given its security significance, is expected to play a vital role in protecting the region’s transportation network from potential threats. This development is set to play a key role in strengthening national infrastructure links with the North East.
