The Central government has sanctioned Rs 33,081.82 crore for states and union territories under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) for the period 2021–22 to 2025–26.

The funding aims to significantly boost India’s healthcare system across primary, secondary, and tertiary levels and enhance preparedness for future health emergencies. Launched in 2021, PM-ABHIM is a centrally sponsored scheme (CSS) with a total outlay of Rs 64,180 crore. It supports projects like constructing Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs), critical care blocks, public health laboratories, and urban health centres. The scheme also includes the creation of integrated public health labs (IPHLs) and block public health units (BPHUs).

So far, the approved Rs 33,081.82 crore has enabled projects including 10,609 rural AAMs, 5,456 Urban AAMs, 2,151 BPHUs, 744 IPHLs, and 621 critical care hospital blocks in districts with populations exceeding five lakh. The scheme aims to build 17,788 rural AAMs and 11,024 Urban AAMs, transforming unbuilt sub-centres into Health and Wellness Centres and ensuring equitable healthcare access, especially in underserved areas. These initiatives are a strategic part of India’s long-term vision to fortify its public health infrastructure.
