Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) has taken a significant step forward in the Coimbatore metro project by issuing a work order to the Coimbatore Corporation for conducting a Land Plan Survey (LPS). This marks the commencement of groundwork for key metro corridors in the city. In response to the directive, the Coimbatore Corporation has begun valuing buildings on a 1.4 km stretch along Sathyamangalam Road, spanning from Textool Bridge to Surya Hospital.
CMRL has sanctioned Rs two crore specifically for carrying out the LPS in this area. A senior corporation official mentioned that digital surveying and utility mapping for the designated stretch have already been completed using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). This mapping covered critical underground infrastructure such as drainage systems, water supply lines, electrical lines, gas pipelines, and telecommunication cables.
Following the completion of the LPS, the cost associated with relocating the identified utilities will be assessed and submitted to CMRL for approval. Parallel efforts are also underway to carry out utility mapping on two major upcoming corridors.
The first corridor spans 20.4 km from Ukkadam Bus Stand to Neelambur integrated station, passing through the Coimbatore International Airport. The second corridor is a 14.4 km stretch extending from Coimbatore Railway Junction to Valiyampalayam Pirivu. Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran said, "Almost 75 per cent of the LPS is completed on Sathyamangalam Road."
He further stated that the District Collector has instructed the civic body to complete building valuation within the next two weeks, after which the land acquisition process will commence.
