Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) will extend the metro corridor from Koyambedu to Pattabiram via Ambattur and Avadi, significantly improving connectivity for western suburbs by 2030.
The 22-km stretch will integrate with the expansion of the long-delayed Chennai-Tiruttani Highway (CTH), and CMRL will also construct three grade separators on the route. According to state highways Chief Engineer S Jawahar Muthuraj, "The pillars will be common for both the metro viaduct and flyover. Land acquisition is underway." The three flyovers—between Ambattur Estate and Telephone Exchange, Dunlop and Ambattur suburban station, and Murugappa Polytechnic and KC Hospital—have been merged with the metro project as they fall within the same corridor.
For commuters beyond Avadi, suburban trains remain the primary mode of travel, but CMRL also plans to develop Avadi as a multi-modal transit hub. "The terminus and the suburban railway stations are located on either side of CTH road, so it is easy to develop it as a multi-modal hub," officials noted. Talks on codeveloping the Avadi bus terminus will begin soon.
