The state government’s in-principle approval has cleared the way for Chennai Metrowater to undertake two major projects aimed at improving the city's water and sewer infrastructure.
The first project, valued at Rs 3,108.55 crore, will involve the installation of a ring main system across the Greater Chennai Corporation. This system will create a circular pipeline connecting all water sources with distribution points, ensuring continuous water supply even if one source fails. The project, funded through loans from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), is set to be completed within four years, with tendering already underway. Designed to handle a projected flow of 1,762 million litres per day, the system will meet the city's demand until 2057.
Additionally, the government has approved a Rs 689.40 crore project to upgrade the aging sewerage system linked to the Nesapakkam sewage treatment plant. This project will improve infrastructure for over 1.16 lakh households, benefiting from ADB funding and slated for completion in three years.
