Chennai Metrowater is set to supply piped drinking water to around 1.2 lakh residents in the western suburbs, including village panchayats like Moulivakkam, Iyyapanthangal, and Paraniputhur. Tenders have been floated for laying a 10-km pipeline from the 530 million litres per day (MLD) Chembarambakkam water treatment plant.
Sivakumar, Metrowater’s superintending engineer, stated, "About 136 MLD will be supplied from the pipelines. The deadline for the project is October 2025." The water network will use a 1,200-mm-diameter pipeline routed through Poonamallee High Road.
These panchayats have already installed household tap connections under the Union government's Jal Jeevan Mission, which mandates 55 litres of water per person per day. Currently, the residents rely on borewells, tankers, or local freshwater sources. The need for consistent daily supply has been emphasised. The scheme is expected to expand to areas like Kolapakkam and Gerugambakkam near the airport.
