Chennai Metrowater is set to introduce smart water meters in nearly one lakh buildings across the city to promote efficient water use and enhance demand-side management.
The Rs 392.59-crore project, planned to be executed under the hybrid annuity model (HAM), will focus on water-intensive users, including commercial buildings, industries, multi-storied structures, and houses over 2,500 sq. ft. The project was initially announced during the 2024-25 Budget but faced delays due to the preparation of a detailed project report, the search for advanced meter technology, and the tender process. So far, smart meters have been installed in about 22,000 buildings, and the project aims to improve operational efficiency and reduce non-revenue water. The new meters will use IoT technology to generate accurate monthly bills based on real-time water consumption.
S Gopi, Secretary of the Subramania Nagar Civic and Welfare Association, raised concerns, saying, “Smart meters must be installed after improving both water and sewer infrastructure.”
