Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation (UPPCL) is set to overhaul its smart metering network, replacing around 11.32 lakh faulty meters with prepaid models by 2027.
The older 2G-based meters, which have struggled with accuracy and communication issues, will be replaced as part of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme. Currently, Uttar Pradesh has installed 45.72 lakh smart meters, but many consumers have complained of billing spikes, communication failures, and unreliable readings. These problems, combined with ongoing operational fees to the previous service provider, created financial strain and consumer dissatisfaction. The new prepaid smart meters, costing Rs 6,016 each, are expected to improve transparency, allowing users to track and manage their electricity usage in real time.
The project, which is expected to cost over Rs 1,600 crore, aims to reduce billing disputes and help consumers manage power expenses better. For UPPCL, the shift to prepaid meters will also improve revenue collection, reduce losses, and enhance network efficiency through remote monitoring and automated disconnection features.
