The Highways Department has started work to widen a 2.5 km stretch of Sardar Patel Road, from IIT Madras to Chellammal College on the GST Road, with a budget of Rs 48 crore.
The road will be expanded from a four-lane to a six-lane facility, including service lanes and footpaths on both sides. This widening aims to alleviate traffic congestion from the Taluk Office junction to Chellammal College. A 500-meter section has already been widened as part of the Madhya Kailash flyover construction. The compound walls of institutions like Anna University and the Highways Research Station will be moved inward. The Raj Bhavan, being a national park, will not be affected by the expansion. The road's widening will shift to the right, starting after the Raj Bhavan.
The project also includes creating footpaths along storm-water drains to ensure water flows towards the Research Station and eventually to the Buckingham Canal. The project, approved in September 2025, will improve traffic flow and drainage.
