Following concerns raised by city residents and the traffic police over pedestrian safety, MLA Chandrashekhar Bawankule and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have jointly announced the construction of four foot-overbridges (FOBs) on Koradi Road in Nagpur.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has awarded the project in March to Oriental Nagpur-Betul Highway. These foot-overbridges aim to provide pedestrians with secure and convenient crossing options across the busy corridor and will be equipped with strategically planned landing points to align with pedestrian movement patterns.
As stated in the plan, the FOBs will be constructed at four key locations: near Modern School Square, Panjra Bus Stop, Shivaji Maharaj Square (near Chakradhar Kirana Stores), and another crossing point between the mid-surface of two flyovers. These spots have been identified as high-risk areas for pedestrian movement due to the convergence of heavy traffic, speed violations, and absence of designated crossings.
The need for these FOBs was particularly emphasised by the traffic police, citing recurring incidents involving pedestrians and the ongoing expansion of infrastructure in the Koradi Road area. The overbridges are expected not only to reduce accident rates but also to support smoother vehicular flow by preventing jaywalking and unauthorised crossings.
“The construction of these foot-overbridges is a vital step in ensuring the safety of pedestrians and addressing the long-standing concerns raised by local authorities and residents,” said a statement from the MLA's office. The announcement has been welcomed by the public, with expectations that the bridges will significantly improve daily commute safety for school children, elderly citizens, and workers in the vicinity. With this project, the government continues to reinforce its commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure in rapidly growing areas of Nagpur, ensuring that pedestrian safety remains central to urban planning.
