Daimler India Commercial Vehicle (DICV), today inaugurated its new bus manufacturing facility at Oragadam.
The commercial vehicle maker, a 100 per cent subsidiary of Stuttgart-based Daimler, invested Rs 425 crore to set up the facility. It will have an initial capacity of 1,500 units, which can be further expanded to 4,000 units.
The manufacturing facility is spread across 27.91 acre in the premises of the existing Rs 4,400 crore manufacturing facility of the company. It will manufacture and assemble buses under two brands — Mercedes Benz and BharatBenz. The buses manufactured will be in a gross vehicle weight (GVW) range of nine and 16 tonne.
The new bus plant will generate 1,300 job opportunities in the state. At present, the Chennai plant employs around 3,000 people.
DICV has partnered with Ireland-based Wrightbus International for setting up the bus plant. The company has sold more than 20,000 BharatBenz range of trucks while it shipped over 2,000 units from Chennai.
