The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has approved the construction of 15 new decentralised sewage treatment plants (DSTPs) in North Delhi, covering areas such as Narela, Bawana, and Mundka.
These plants will collectively treat 39 million gallons of wastewater daily, benefiting approximately 1.2 million residents across 59 unauthorised colony clusters and 37 villages. The ?1,965 crore project is part of a larger sewage line expansion covering 785 km, aimed at reducing untreated sewage discharge into drains and the Yamuna River. Each DSTP will serve multiple adjoining villages and colonies, enhancing local sewage treatment and water recycling for horticulture and industrial use.
Currently, Delhi’s existing 37 sewage treatment plants handle 667 MGD capacity, but 23% of wastewater remains untreated. This initiative aligns with Delhi’s sustainable urban growth goals and aims to improve groundwater levels and reduce environmental stress.
The move complements other Yamuna cleaning efforts, including the upcoming largest STP in Okhla.
